Cesky Krumlov Town theater holds annually more than 120 performances, with attendance nearly 18 thousand spectators.
On the agenda are theatrical performances, concerts or music entertainment. The theatre is mostly playing drama, puppet theater for children (and adults) and in smaller range contemporary art of dance, musical, operetta and more. In music program you will find concerts of various musical genres, but mainly jazz, folk and classical music, taking place in the theater hall or in the theater club.
Premises, equipment and facilities of the theater are suitable for conferences, seminars, workshops and other special functions.
The Town Theater has a long rich theatrical tradition in Ceský Krumlov. The history is closely connected with the Jesuits Order activity. In 1613 they begin to use the building in Horní street no. 153 for their school and theatrical intentions. In this year a wooden stage with a moving scene was build on the College yard. The theatre was moved to a brick building in the middle of 17th century.
It served the prime purpose even after 1945 until the beginning of the seventies. Then it was intend that the ancient building was no longer adequate enough for scenic purposes, and became a part of newly reconstructed hotel. Scenic life kept on in temporary stages and after almost a quarter of a century the theatre had its own building.
In the late eighties and nineties the existing building of Town Theatre in Horni street passed through a complete reconstruction and it was reopened for the public in June 1993.
Currently, the Town theater is a modern cultural venue with a theater hall (capacity up to 280 people). All common areas are wheelchair accessible and there is a theater hall induction loop for hard of hearing. In drama club with wide range of excellent quality is not missing a separate non-smoking and smoking area. In summer you can spend your time on theater terrace with the one of the most beautiful view of the historical center dominated by the Cesky Krumlov state Castle.
